The religious rites of Holy Week in Alghero recount the town’s history, which is closely tied to Catalogna in both language and traditions. Indeed the ceremonies are reminiscent of typical Spanish customs and involve numerous confraternities both Italian and Catalan.
The most important rites take place on Good Friday. After the Disclavament, the mournful Deposition ritual, the body of Christ is carried through the streets of the town on a death bed, which the local people call Bressol, the cradle. As night falls the town is illuminated by the mystical glow of the Farols (torches) carried by women and by the street lamps covered with red veils.
